As a child, I was always so captivated by solving puzzles with the ways you had to put certain pieces together to make something fit, try to find words in a box of assorted letters, or even find what was different in one photo to the next. Those were things that made puzzles so stimulating. If you don’t think puzzle solving is a part of math, you’d be surprisingly wrong. Mathematics uses applied logic and problem solving to complete the “puzzle” you’re working on. “Puzzles” don’t just have to be written algebra, geometry, or calculus equations either. Math is more than just solving problems. Math is seen and used in real life every day. You may not realize it, but when you’re using coupons to get 25% off canned items or trying to sew any kind of clothing item, you’re secretly doing math. Daily everyday tasks need applied algebra to complete. Basic adding and subtracting is used every day everywhere you look. Math is everywhere and it finds sneaky ways to always appear in day-to-day life.
While being a part of the field of information technology, I’ve found that the skills I acquired from doing mathematics apply here. Having to write lines of code, solve binary, or even build a computer with all its hardware are some examples. These examples all share mathematical components, and it is using logical thinking to solve problems. While constructing a computer you need logical reasoning to make sure your power supply matches what graphics card you have. These mathematical skills are so important in the information technology field, so it’s important to understand even the most basic math.
Mathematics is such a beautiful subject which is why it is so upsetting hearing so many people don’t like it. Mathematics paves the way for all different kinds of subjects, which is why I find it so important. There are endless possibilities in the world of math; so much to learn and apply.
